Biography

By playing pure and simple rock & roll without making an explicit issue of her gender, Joan Jett became a figurehead for several generations of female rockers. Jett's brand of rock & roll is loud and stripped-down, yet with overpowering hooks -- a combination of the Stones' tough, sinewy image and beat, AC/DC chords, and glam rock hooks. As the numerous covers she has recorded show, she adheres both to rock tradition and breaks with it -- she plays classic three-chord rock & roll, yet she also loves the trashy elements (in particular, Gary Glitter) of it as well, and she plays with a defiant sneer. From her first band, the Runaways, through her hit-making days in the '80s with the Blackhearts right until her unexpected revival in the '90s, she hasn't changed her music, yet she's kept her quality control high, making one classic single ("I Love Rock 'n Roll") along the way.

Jett was born in Philadelphia, PA; her family moved to Los Angeles when she was 12 years old. By the time she was 15, she had formed her first band and was performing around town. Kim Fowley, a Los Angeles record producer, discovered the band at one of their gigs and became their manager; soon, he renamed the all-female group the Runaways and secured them a contract with Mercury Records. The band released three albums that never had much commercial success in America, yet were very popular in Japan; the group was popular in both the Los Angeles hard rock and punk scenes, which led to Jett's production of the Germs' first record, (GI). The Runaways group broke up in 1980 and Jett moved to New York to begin a solo career.

Teaming up with producer/manager Kenny Laguna, Jett independently released her self-titled debut album in 1980 in America, since no labels were interested in signing her. The record was a more traditional rock & roll record than the punky Runaways, yet it retained her previous band's defiant attitude. The record sold very well for an independent release, leading to a contract with Boardwalk Records, who reissued the album under the title Bad Reputation; it soon climbed to number 51 on the American charts.

Jett formed the Blackhearts between Bad Reputation and her second album, 1981's I Love Rock-n-Roll; the group included guitarist Ricky Byrd, bassist Gary Ryan, and drummer Lee Crystal. Released at the end of 1981, I Love Rock-n-Roll became her greatest success, sending her into the Top Ten. Originally the B-side of an Arrows single, the title track was an enormous success, spending seven weeks at number one in the spring of 1982. The follow-up single, a version of Tommy James & the Shondells' "Crimson and Clover," went Top Ten as well; a single of Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)," taken from the Bad Reputation album, reached number 20 in the summer of

1982. Album, released in 1983, went gold yet had no hits that compared with either "I Love Rock 'n Roll" or "Crimson and Clover."

Jett starred in Paul Schrader's 1987 film Light of Day, which featured the Top 40 title song, yet she didn't have another Top Ten hit until 1988, when "I Hate Myself for Loving You," taken from the Up Your Alley album, hit number eight; the album became her second platinum record. After the album's success, her career had another slow period, with 1990's all-covers album The Hit List making it to number 36 and 1991's Notorious failing to chart. Between Notorious and 1994's Pure and Simple, a new generation of female rockers came of age and everyone from hard alternative rockers like L7 to the minimalist, riot grrrl punk rockers like Bikini Kill claimed Jett and the Runaways as an influence. As a consequence, Pure and Simple received more press and positive reviews than any of her albums since the mid-'80s.

In 1995, Jett recorded the live album Evilstig with the remaining members of the Gits, a Seattle punk rock band whose lead singer, Mia Zapata, was raped and murdered in 1993. Singer, songwriter, producer. Born Joan Larkin on September 22, 1960, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One of the top women in rock, Joan Jett had a string of hits during the 1980s and 1990s. Her passion for music began early, and she received her first guitar at the age of 14.

Moving to southern California, Jett began frequenting a popular youth club known as Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco. There, she found inspiration from the glam rock stars of the day. "I learned to scream from Marc Bolan of T. Rex," Jett explained to Esquire.

Jett started her musical career as a teenager, forming her first serious band, the Runaways, at the age of 15. The final line-up included Jett on guitar and vocals; Sandy West on drums; Cherie Currie on lead vocals; Jackie Fox on bass guitar; and Lita Ford on guitar. The band was ahead of its time in many ways, with its hard-rock sound emerging during an era when disco music was king. They also felt dismissed by audiences and critics because of their young age and their gender; the public didn't seem to know what to do with five girls who sang about sex, rebelling, and partying. The musicians' fashion choices also alienated them from mainstream fans; Currie chose to wear lingerie on stage, and Jett often appeared in her trademark red, leather jumpsuit.

In 1976, the Runaways released their first self-titled album, which failed to impress critics and music buyers alike. Still, the song "Cherry Bomb," with its rebellious and raw edge, which Jett wrote with friend Kim Fowley, became a punk hit. The following year, the Runaways released their sophomore effort, Queens of Noise, which featured such tracks as "Born to Be Bad" and "Neon Angels." While the album performed poorly in the U.S., the Runaways received a warm welcome in Japan, scoring three gold records there.

After Currie and Fox left in mid-1977, Jett emerged as the group's lead singer. She was already a powerful force behind the scenes, writing most of the Runaways' songs. The band struggled through two more albums before they were dropped from their record label. The group called it quits in 1979. "When the Runaways broke up, I didn't know what I wanted to do. A breakup is like losing a very good friend. It's like a death," Jett later explained to Esquire.

Deciding to pursue a solo career, Jett spent some time in England working with Paul Cook and Steve Jones, both former members of the legendary punk band the Sex Pistols. She then returned to Los Angeles where she worked as a producer for the first album of the L.A. punk band the Germs. She also tried acting, appearing in a film based on the story of the Runaways entitled We're All Crazy Now. Around this time, Jett met producer Kenny Laguna and songwriter Ritchie Cordell. Both men helped her with her first solo album.

Jett tried to get a record label to distribute her new album, but she was rejected by 23 different companies. Out of frustration, she and Laguna founded Blackheart Records in 1980. In making the record, she got help from an unlikely source—rock supergroup the Who. Laguna was friends with the band members and their manager, and they let Jett use their recording facilities. She later told Rolling Stone magazine that "We wouldn't have been able to make the record if they hadn't helped us. They basically let us record what became Bad Reputation and [said], 'Pay us when you can.

Biography

Ana Vidovic is an extraordinary talent with formidable gifts taking her place amongst the elite musicians of the world today. Ms. Vidovic has given over one thousand public performances since first taking the stage in 1988. Her international performance career includes recitals in New York, London, Paris, Vienna, Salzburg, Rome, Budapest, Warsaw, Tel Aviv, Oslo, Copenhagen, Toronto, Baltimore, San Francisco, Houston, Austin, Dallas, St. Louis and beyond. Mel Bay Publications released Ana Vidovic's most recent DVD in 2009 entitled "Guitar Artistry in Concert," a journey through the music of Torroba, Piazzolla and Pierre Bensusan, Sergio Assad, Stanley Myers, Villa-Lobos and Agustin Barrios Mangoré. "Guitar Virtuoso," Ana's performance of works by Bach, Torroba, Paganini and Walton, was released on DVD by the Mel Bay label in 2006.

Ms. Vidovic continues to broaden her repertoire and captivates audiences around the world with her global touring in the 2010-11 season. Following performances in Poland in Summer 2010, Ms. Vidovic began the season with a tour to Reunion Island (France) and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Her schedule, internationally, continues with concerto appearances with the Romanian Radio Symphony in Bucharest, the Zagreb Soloists in Japan and recitals throughout Japan and at festivals in Brazil, Germany, Netherlands and Scotland. Ms. Vidovic's U.S. concerto engagements this season include the Missoula, Tacoma and Westmoreland symphonies. Her recital schedule in the USA is highlighted by her debut recital at New York's 92nd Street Y. She also performs recitals at The Strathmore (Bethesda, MD), Baltimore, Washington (DC), Jacksonville, Greensburg (PA), Boston, Clarksville (TN), Kansas City and Salt Lake City.

Highlights of Ana Vidovic’s 2009-10 season included tours to Korea and Colombia, with stateside engagements including recitals in Pensacola (FL), Baltimore, Austin (TX), Brookville (NY) and Erie (PA; and a concerto performance with the Asheville Symphony conducted by Daniel Meyer. She has also performed as soloist with the West Virginia Symphony, among others.

Ms. Vidovic has won an impressive number of prizes and international competitions including first prizes in the Albert Augustine International Competition in Bath, England, the Fernando Sor competition in Rome, Italy and the Francisco Tarrega competition in Benicasim, Spain. Other top prizes include the Eurovision Competition for Young Artists, Mauro Giuliani competition in Italy, Printemps de la Guitare in Belgium and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. In Croatia the guitarist has performed with the Zagreb Soloists and the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and with Symphony Orchestra of the Croatian Radio and Television, as well as having been featured in three television documentaries by the eminent Croatian film director Petar Krelja.

Ana Vidovic comes from the small town of Karlovac near Zagreb, Croatia, and started playing guitar at the age of 5, and by 7 had given her first public performance. At the age of 11 she was performing internationally, and at 13 became the youngest student to attend the prestigious National Musical Academy in Zagreb where she studied with Professor Istvan Romer. Ana's reputation in Europe led to an invitation to study with Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Conservatory where she graduated in 2005.

Heatwave were a band formed in the United Kingdom, and were a group unit between 1975 and 1984.

The group were formed by the Wilder brothers, Johnnie and Keith Wilder [American servicemen based in West Germany], following their discharge from the U.S. Army. The Wilder brothers sang in clubs and bars with an assortment of bands whilst still enlisted.

After advertising in a music paper, the duo received a response from Cleethorpes, English born songwriter Rod Temperton. Further members were, subsequently, enlisted to the Heatwave ranks. These comprised of an American, Eric Johns, a Czech, Ernest Berger, and a Spaniard, Mario Mantese.

Heatwave began touring the London club circuit during the mid-1970's and signed to GTO Records in 1976. They were paired in the studio with GTO house producer/session guitarist Barry Blue and rhythm guitarist Jesse Whitten. Rhythm guitarist Roy Carter replaced Whitten after Jesse was stabbed to death in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois in 1976.

Heatwave's first album release was 'Too Hot to Handle', which saw the light of day in late 1976, and was dedicated to Jesse Whitten.

Radio London deejay Robbie Vincent had been promoting their material on his Radio London show each Saturday lunchtime.

Their first single release was 'Ain't No Half Steppin', which was, subsequently, followed by the song 'Super Soul Sister' b/w 'Turn Out The Lamplight', and then the hit 'Boogie Nights', a song which, eventually, established the group's popularity nation wide.

'Too Hot To Handle' b/w/ 'Slip Your Disc To This' was a 45 release, additionally in 1976.

Many of the groups single releases featured flip sides, which never appeared on any albums, including 'Slip Your Disc To This', 'Birthday', 'Someone Like You', 'Wack That Axe' and 'Turn Out The Lamplight' (later to feature on the Rod Temperton produced 'Give Me The Night' album for George Benson).

'Too Hot To Handle' saw a further single release in the form of 'Always and Forever', which reached number 2 on the R & B charts, number 18 nationally.

Barry Blue's production skills were utilised on the groups follow up album, 'Central Heating' in April 1978.

From the album 'The Groove Line', reached number seven in the charts, although the albums tour de force was the song 'Mind Blowing Decisions', which also charted.

'Star Of The Story X', also featured on the 1980, George Benson release 'Give Me The Night'.

Rod Temperton officially left the band in 1977 to work on a highly impressive songwriting career.

His compositions have been recorded by the likes of Rufus, James Ingram, Michael McDonald, Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, Manhattan Transfer, Jeffrey Osborne, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Bob James, Patti Austin, Quincy Jones, Karen Carpenter, the Brothers Johnson, George Benson, Herbie Hancock and Michael Jackson, and included the title song to the multi-million selling album 'Thriller'.

Heatwave's own story began to unravel into a series of unfortunate events.

Jesse Whitten had been stabbed to death, Mantese was stabbed leaving a gala in London by an unknown person.

For several minutes, he was clinically dead. Following several months, he awoke from coma, and was blind, mute and completely paralysed.

Johnnie Wilder was then paralyzed from the neck down following an auto accident whilst visiting family and friends in Dayton, Ohio in early 1979.

Later that year 'Hot Property' was released, which contained the songs 'That's The Way We'll Always Say Goodnight' and 'This Night We Fell'.

Johnnie Wilder continued as the group's lead singer, despite his injuries and wheelchair bound, producing their work and singing in the studio, whilst another vocalist, J.D. Nicholas, took his place onstage.

1980 saw the release of the album 'Candles' with Rod Temperton providing the songs, except for the melody 'All I Am', which was written by Barry Blue's former writing partner Lynsey De Paul.

The group released he single 'Gangsters Of The Groove' from the album, whilst 'Posin Til Closin' found a positive response on the dancefloors.

Heatwave's 1982 album, 'Current', saw them working again with Barry Blue.

The album featured input from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Imagination, Paulinho Da Costa and Greg Phillinganes.

The Barry Blue penned, 'Find It In Your Heart' received some positive feedback and a Rod Temperton written single, 'Lettin' It Loose', was a hit in August of that year. In 1984 J.D. Nicholas left the group to join the ranks of the Commodores.

Heatwave did reform, briefly, in the mid Nineties, however, the only surviving member of the original group was Keith Wilder.

Johnnie Wilder released two solo acapella gospel albums (one set, entitled 'My Goal', saw some airplay in the U.K.), however, he sadly passed away on the 13th of May 2006 in Clayton, Ohio.
